Dealing with divorce and sorting out separation is a dramatic, life-changing experience for everyone. There are times when you may feel like you’re adrift, perhaps even drowning, in a sea of emotional turmoil as you try to navigate your way through this complex journey.

And if you have children, the end of your intimate, co-parenting relationship can literally make you feel ‘halved’. Because after you ‘split up’ you’re no longer a part of that parenting ‘double act’ – you’re now a single parent. And that feels different emotionally – as though you’re somewhat diminished and your ‘other half’ is missing.

When we lose something precious (our relationships), we begin to experience a whole range of ‘loss-cycle’ emotions. For most of us this feels like being on some awful roller coaster, with it’s unpredictable and uncontrollable ups & downs. And although this cycle is a necessary journey, helping us process the change, there will be times, as you recover from your separation (loss), when you may feel overwhelmed by the different stages of grieving i.e. sadness, anger guilt, depression, etc. Now, more than ever, you need some support and someone to turn to.

You may also notice that your children just can’t seem to get enough of you at a time when you’re finding it most difficult to function at your best. This is because they are experiencing these ‘loss’ emotions too and are depending on you now to be your ‘whole, strong self’. Especially as they learn to adjust to being with only one parent at a time and missing the other. They may start finding it harder to share you with their siblings too, so you feel like you’re constantly being stretched in different directions.
