One of the most memorable things you can do as a family is to go on holiday. A rare opportunity to get together, away from the hectic pace of everyday life, no school runs, homework, or facing the dreaded ironing pile to find something to wear for work. Holidays offer a chance to have a break and spend some real time with the people who are most important to us.

What could be better than booking a dream holiday and jetting off somewhere exotic?

The thing is, if you have younger children, things are never that simple. Going abroad requires a lot of planning, and it can be expensive.

Some families opt for a staycation rather than venturing abroad. Staycation advocates will tell you they save money and have a fantastic time. But are they just saying that?

Interestingly, the research agrees with them! If you are concerned your family will miss out by not travelling overseas, you might not need to worry just yet…

A recent study of British holidaymakers suggests that taking a holiday within the UK improves general wellbeing more than going abroad (NCTA BDRC Holiday Trends 2018, p4)- so you don’t need to go far to have a break and improve your wellbeing. In fact, you may actually be better off staying in the UK.

And if you really want to get the most from a UK holiday, head to the coast. When it comes to destinations, “coastal holidays have a more positive impact on relationships than UK holidays in general”NCTA BDRC Holiday Trends 2018, p4.

So if you want to improve your family’s wellbeing and relationships, a seaside holiday in the UK might be just what you’re looking for.

If you like the idea of a coastal staycation, the Guides on The Tourist Trail website are a great place to get some inspiration.

Now all that’s left is the fun part: Telling the kids you’re taking them on holiday!
